<br />
This craft is perfect for cold winter months and so easy to put together.<br />
<br />
Here are the supplies needed:<br />
<br />
Socks (large for actual snowman and baby sock or small sock for snowman's hat)<br />
Rice (16 ounce bag)<br />
Buttons<br />
Hot Glue Gun<br />
Pom-poms<br />
Ribbon<br />
String<br />
Scissors<br />
Large bowl<br />
<br />
How to:<br />
<br />
Start by cutting off the top part of the sock and then turn the sock inside out.<br />
<br />
Tie off the one end of the sock with a piece of string and then turn the sock right side out again.<br />
<br />
Next, fill a large bowl with rice and begin filling your sock. I had my daughter fill the snowman over a large bowl as to avoid spilled rice. Once your snowman is nice and stuffed, tie off the open end with another piece of string.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3mwPTr03_QHwqxa01bPt100-PQkkK2QykMHnU1qNys2h23kHDENeBGarc1DNUilsOH40TfEJuGNU76KXNAxURKfH0It4aa3apEt9HhneTuZchIPksVuuy3zQExshILb7HVFwYzvbWVxM/s1600/filling+the+snowman+sock+january+2019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3mwPTr03_QHwqxa01bPt100-PQkkK2QykMHnU1qNys2h23kHDENeBGarc1DNUilsOH40TfEJuGNU76KXNAxURKfH0It4aa3apEt9HhneTuZchIPksVuuy3zQExshILb7HVFwYzvbWVxM/s400/filling+the+snowman+sock+january+2019.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Take another piece of string and tie it around the middle of your snowman. Pull nice and tight to make that clear separation between the snowman's head and body.<br />
<br />
Now you can start decorating your sock snowman. Adult supervision needed as this is where the hot glue gun comes in.<br />
<br />
Pom-pom's can be used for the eyes and nose. You could also use pom-pom's in place of buttons or stick to buttons, like we did.<br />
<br />
Attach your ribbon as the scarf<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH5zK1tWsB41KDxI4Gp6ln_rgPxrMD6ObkWnv9D9V6YB6jeCiEDUQ-9I4Po0XwYeNitHA5q-JXlRK8WzvwxxsyBWB1gqRSC_ye9rx6v88gmjzhUcJKWHZBACLUOppSptImpAl7ODdcvRw/s1600/attaching+the+snowman+scarf+to+sock+snowman+january+2019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH5zK1tWsB41KDxI4Gp6ln_rgPxrMD6ObkWnv9D9V6YB6jeCiEDUQ-9I4Po0XwYeNitHA5q-JXlRK8WzvwxxsyBWB1gqRSC_ye9rx6v88gmjzhUcJKWHZBACLUOppSptImpAl7ODdcvRw/s400/attaching+the+snowman+scarf+to+sock+snowman+january+2019.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
The extra baby sock (or smaller sock) is used as your snowman's hat.<br />
<br />
My daughter and I both made our own and we think they are adorable and add a fun winter touch to the house!<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz9KTckWhMIVE92uYT3Sp5-zLvfXcDh0_50nA6ulkLAyVSmA7QywBtbsJ2KmeOsAbx6Eduqp8TtnghdQEB-xmXVWqTz0D27JdgSJZd0jATtWe9l1iGF5mqBfI865RhMHbfnWBXQoz7us8/s1600/tiffany+cape+back+shot+june+2017+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz9KTckWhMIVE92uYT3Sp5-zLvfXcDh0_50nA6ulkLAyVSmA7QywBtbsJ2KmeOsAbx6Eduqp8TtnghdQEB-xmXVWqTz0D27JdgSJZd0jATtWe9l1iGF5mqBfI865RhMHbfnWBXQoz7us8/s640/tiffany+cape+back+shot+june+2017+pm.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
For my daughter's 7th birthday party she asked for a Superhero theme party. Well, you can't have a superhero party without capes, right!? There was one problem though, I do not sew! I searched Pinterest and I found an easy no sew cape. If you are anything like me and need easy, check out the post from <a href="http://www.serving-pink-lemonade.com/2010/10/super-cape.html" target="_blank">Serving Pink Lemonade</a>, where they share a printable to help cut out the capes. However, the cutting part is so super simple that if I can do it free hand, so can you! There is also a great tutorial on making no sew capes over at <a href="http://www.makeandtakes.com/no-sew-superhero-cape?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed:+makeandtakes+(Make+and+Takes)&crlt.pid=camp.5xSQd22jcRzl" target="_blank">Make and Takes. </a><br />
<br />
I started off buying my fabric from Hobby Lobby. I purchased felt because it seemed the most 'user friendly' material. My measurements were approximately 26" long and approximately 20" wide. You can go longer if you are looking for a floor length cape but for my 7 year old and her friends, this size is what worked for us. Once you tell the person at the store the measurements of the cape and how many capes you'll need, they will cut you the appropriate amount of material. <br />
<br />
Once you get your capes home, fold the felt in half and cut the neck part out. Once your capes are cut, you can get creative as you'd like. For me, I found some iron on's from Hobby Lobby that were on clearance. The best part is the iron on's were all superhero in nature and worked perfectly AND they had exactly 15 of them!!<br />
<br />
After all your creating is complete, you will need some velcro to add to the cape. Sticky back velcro works well but some of the velcro I used came off. That being said, a little bit of hot glue to reinforce couldn't hurt.<br />
<br />
So, if you are looking for a no sew, easy cape, all you need to do is:<br />
1. know your measurements and how many capes<br />
2. choose your material<br />
3. have your material cut to size<br />
4. use the printable listed in this post or freehand cut the cape<br />
5. add any embellishments<br />
6. velcro<br />
<br />
In addition to the capes, I picked up masks, also from Hobby Lobby. If you don't want the pre-made masks, you could buy craft foam, stickers, elastic and have the kids make their own as a craft at the party. <br />
<br />
As for the goody bags, we had a pinata and they added all the goodies from the pinata into their goody bags. Of course the kids got to keep their cape and mask too!<br />
<br />
In hindsight, I wish I had snapped more photos, but here are a couple of random ones. <br />

<br />
My 11 year old recently finished up a fun basketball season, making it all the way to the final four!<br />
With all the hard work from the team and the coaches, I put together a little goody bag of snacks for the boys and a few gifts for the coaches. <br />
<br />
These snacks could also be used at the end of a game but also worked well as an end of season treat.<br />
<br />
Here's what you'll need to make some of your own:<br />
<br />
Large clear bags (got ours from Micahel's)<br />
Clementines<br />
Orange Gatorade<br />
Cheese and Peanut Butter crackers<br />
Reeses Peanut Butter cups<br />
Orange ribbon<br />
Orange paper<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirV_UCA0_l6Ci41zg_mRqspMWOjzEeLRGMOYiHA1-YvdKJiKTGlkio9yJmxUbxJTg4PqxJ23HyZ42meUFBsZbfbnY1daYL6zcIosjFnY1B2HwSMNi2iikvX2ZgKt5lFSuIKR-XWC1Zfis/s1600/materials+for+basketball+kids+goody+bag.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirV_UCA0_l6Ci41zg_mRqspMWOjzEeLRGMOYiHA1-YvdKJiKTGlkio9yJmxUbxJTg4PqxJ23HyZ42meUFBsZbfbnY1daYL6zcIosjFnY1B2HwSMNi2iikvX2ZgKt5lFSuIKR-XWC1Zfis/s400/materials+for+basketball+kids+goody+bag.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Simply add all your goodies into the bag, punch a hole in the label, loop the ribbon through, tie off and viola! Basketball goody bags that the kids will enjoy! Also, for the label you can simply type the saying in Word or Google Docs and print.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsXfY6vzg5602-uquN3-SPjkT4FpKFeFxZGRHfSZwhvEsQuJfoZpv9crxsdWe4VTCUesFQ4Yb6U3BZWOwvjluqn-AhQeD-DRZvO1nYnpUhogDi89T5bSEyaTzUsUUUw1r5IBu8iujdDHA/s1600/orange+you+glad+you+played+basketball+goody+bag+2+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsXfY6vzg5602-uquN3-SPjkT4FpKFeFxZGRHfSZwhvEsQuJfoZpv9crxsdWe4VTCUesFQ4Yb6U3BZWOwvjluqn-AhQeD-DRZvO1nYnpUhogDi89T5bSEyaTzUsUUUw1r5IBu8iujdDHA/s400/orange+you+glad+you+played+basketball+goody+bag+2+pm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Next it was the coaches turn. Each coach was given a gift card but to spruce it up a bit, I added a printable and candy bar to the gift bags. I got the idea and printable for the label at <a href="http://eighteen25.com/2011/05/coach-thank-you-tags/" target="_blank">Eighteen 25</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8NzuxViT2VpMsmTuVGR30xVjVFQVuo5mC0p3LHiSHrGgwB0HZBFGYtDA36Y7SJBprf_lpmByNjeY-O-6maXOmjbHps3ylXmXW-POp5BPJedam4GUAfgl4WfTD8RiCmJ9sulF8iPXd8Rs/s1600/coaches+gift+bag+skor+candy+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8NzuxViT2VpMsmTuVGR30xVjVFQVuo5mC0p3LHiSHrGgwB0HZBFGYtDA36Y7SJBprf_lpmByNjeY-O-6maXOmjbHps3ylXmXW-POp5BPJedam4GUAfgl4WfTD8RiCmJ9sulF8iPXd8Rs/s640/coaches+gift+bag+skor+candy+pm.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
In addition to the gift cards, we also presented the coaches with a jar full of starburst candy, orange ones, of course, along with another printable. There are so many fun ways to use starburst candy for coaches, teachers and friends. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGWGTMaJ4UrcsJvy6umOlBj_ZofdElgR8to0lvI9ajFQtVLxGNjjcgUKf3p5XlrRKhV3Ir_5LX3zSAN71OMDpQ5I5C_PekRAtwwxh33ATnxkuvm92hAphP8vJ5amp__UmHKNGQVA6gt4A/s1600/starburst+coach+gift+april+2017+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGWGTMaJ4UrcsJvy6umOlBj_ZofdElgR8to0lvI9ajFQtVLxGNjjcgUKf3p5XlrRKhV3Ir_5LX3zSAN71OMDpQ5I5C_PekRAtwwxh33ATnxkuvm92hAphP8vJ5amp__UmHKNGQVA6gt4A/s400/starburst+coach+gift+april+2017+pm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Last, I picked up a basketball for each coach and had the boys from the team sign them. Just a nice piece of memorabilia for the coaches! Forgot to snap a picture of the signed balls but pretty straight forward and just another coach idea. <br />
<br />
Finally, if you are looking for another treat, try these super simple<a href="http://dabblingmomma.blogspot.com/2015/11/5-cupcake-recipes-for-everyday-mom.html" target="_blank"> basketball cupcakes</a>. I made this for the past 2 seasons and they always go over great. Look good and taste yummy too!!<br />

<br />
Are you learning letters of the alphabet with your preschooler? We did letter of the week when Tiffany was a preschooler and I found that letters W, X, Y and Z were a bit of challenge.<br />
<br />
We started at the beginning of the alphabet and went to the end. As we approached our last 4 letters, I found myself running out of ideas especially for letter X. If you are having a similar experience, check out our activities for W, X, Y and Z<br />
<br />
<b>Letter W:</b><br />
W is for Watermelon. <br />
<br />
Materials used:<br />
Paper plate<br />
Green marker<br />
Pink marker<br />
Black marker<br />
Black beans<br />
Double sided tape<br />
Scissors<br />
<br />
Simply cut a paper plate in half and let your child begin coloring it with the colors of a watermelon!<br />

After our craft I decided to put our black beans to use for some simple preschool math. The beans acted as the 'watermelon seeds!'</div>
<br />
I used double sided tape which made it super easy for the beans to stick.<br />
<br />
"W" ended up being a craft and math lesson!<br />

<br />
<b>Letter X:</b><br />
X is for X-ray<br />
<br />
Materials used:<br />
Black construction paper<br />
Q-tips<br />
White crayon<br />
Glue<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
This can be a tricky letter but have to say it produced the most fun and laughs! After searching I found quite a few x-ray crafts and decided on these two.<br />
<br />
Our first letter "X" activity was using Q-tips to show the 'bones' in our hands. We traced our hands and up part of our arm and then glued on some q-tips. Both of us made one so that we could compare the size difference. <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Next, we printed a full size paper skeleton, mixed it up and had my preschooler arrange the skeleton pieces in order. It was a hit! As you can see her giggling in the 2nd photo!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I decided we would do some graphing with colors, while focusing on the letter "Y." Once I set up the floor graph my preschooler went around the house finding things matching the colors on our graph. Once finished, we counted how many items for each color to determine which color had the most items. Before we started we both guessed blue would have the most but believe it or not "Y" won!!<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Letter Z: </b><br />
Z is for Zebra:<br />
<br />
Materials used:<br />
Paper plate<br />
Black construction paper or black foam<br />
White construction paper<br />
Paper for zebra's nose<br />
Black marker<br />
<br />
Paper plate crafts are so easy and a go to when unsure of an activity to do with a letter. For "Z" we chose a paper plate Zebra craft. <br />

<br />
<br />
It is the end of February and the birds are beginning to sing once again! They know that spring is just around the corner, 3 cheers for spring!!!!<br />
<br />
During the winter months it is much harder for birds to find food. We do keep a bird feeder out to help our feathery friends but we also like to take things one step further by creating our own bird feeder. <br />
<br />
A few years ago we made<a href="http://dabblingmomma.blogspot.com/2014/02/recycled-bird-feeders.html" target="_blank"> recycled bird feeders</a>. It was a two-fold, we got to help the birds while being kind to the earth by recycling. <br />
<br />
This time around we decided to use bagels instead of cardboard rolls. We got the idea from a Sesame Street book that we have called, Love the Earth Crafts. My son is now 11 and we have had this book since he was a preschooler! My daughter has since taken a liking to it and has many pages dog eared of the crafts she wants to try. <br />
<br />
This is a super easy activity that doesn't require many materials. Here's what you will need:<br />
<br />
Bagel (the book instructions call for a round loaf of bread but we couldn't find that and substituted with a bagel!)<br />
<br />
Peanut Butter<br />
<br />
Birdseed<br />
<br />
Large plate or baking sheet<br />
<br />
Spoon or butter knife<br />
<br />
String or ribbon<br />

I've put together a few of our favorites!<br />
<br />

<span style="text-align: start;"><b><span style="font-size: large;">Recycled Rudolph</span></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Our Girl Scout Daisy troop was looking to earn their Use Resources Wisely petal. Since we are right around the holiday season, I browsed Pinterest and found this adorable Rudolph craft using toilet paper rolls and cardboard from cereal boxes. Using recycled items like these and talking about recycling would be perfect to help the girls earn their Daisy petal.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.craftymorning.com/" target="_blank">Crafty Morning</a> has some really fun crafts and that's where I found this <a href="http://www.craftymorning.com/handprint-reindeer-toilet-paper-roll/" target="_blank">Reindeer/Rudolph craft.</a> <br />
<br />
The other thing I loved about this was that it's personalized by using your child's hands as Rudolph's antlers. <br />
<br />
You can get the list of items needed and step by step instructions by clicking on the link above.<br />
<br />
My daughter had to miss the troop meeting where the girls made this craft but we worked on it at home and here's our version.<br />
<br />
<b>Items needed:</b><br />
Cereal box cardboard<br />
Red tissue paper<br />
Black Sharpie marker<br />
Toilet paper roll<br />
Ribbon<br />
<br />
We started off tracing my daughters hands onto the cardboard, then cut out. The hands will be the reindeer's antlers. Next, my daughter drew a face on the toilet paper roll and then bunched up a bit of tissue paper for the nose. She's on a kick with drawing hearts so she added to hearts to each antler. For the 'scarf' we wrapped some ribbon at the bottom of the toilet paper roll. To hold the antlers in place simply make 2 slits on each side of the toilet paper roll.<br />
<br />
Voila! Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer! So simple and so cute! <br />
<br />
There are all kinds of ways you could make this reindeer craft. Our other Daisy leader used pipe cleaners for the antlers and a red gem for the nose instead of tissue paper. With this craft you and your child or classroom can be as creative as you'd like...........have fun!!<br />
<br />
Next up.....<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is such an easy craft and a fun gift to share with family, friends or neighbors. We made a bunch up and delivered to some of my daughter's friends. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Items needed:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Brown pipe cleaners</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Red pom pom's</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Bell</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Googly eyes</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We used a hot glue gun to adhere the accessories to our reindeer. This part should be done by an adult and/or with adult supervision. They really turn out cute!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Our last fun reindeer idea is not a craft but a cookie.......</div>

<br />
<br />
My daughter had a friend over one afternoon and I came up with the idea of having the girls make emoji faces on balloons. Looking through my stash of balloons, I found a bunch of yellow ones...........perfect!<br />
<br />
(note: we did this activity late summer when it was just too hot to be outside. With colder weather beginning to settle in around the country, this could also be a great indoor winter activity. <br />
<br />
There was very little instruction needed. After using the compressor to blow up the balloons and giving the girls a handful of colored permanent markers, they got right to work!<br />
<br />
My daughter and her friend are 1st and 2 grade so we didn't talk alot about feelings as for them it was more about imagination and drawing. However, this could be a fun learning activity for preschoolers who are learning about feelings and emotion. After drawing different faces you could ask what feelings the balloons have by looking at the faces. Continue the conversation by asking what makes them feel happy or sad.<br />
<br />

The girls wanted to do more but I ran out of yellow balloons. Fear not! Enter, popsicle sticks and yellow construction paper. This was a great fine motor skill too for cutting out the yellow emoji faces. They had just as much fun with these as they did with the balloons.<br />

<br />
My daughter had her friend over and I thought about incorporating some fun with learning. I had picked up a few packages of balloons at a yard sale and decided to turn the balloons into a sight word game.<br />
<br />
I simply blew up a few balloons, wrote sight words on them and let the girls out in the yard to find the balloons. But first, I wrote the sight words on a piece of paper that I used to call out to the girls. I had 2 of each word written on the balloons so that both girls could find the same word. It was a little bit of a race too. Once they found the balloon with the correct sight word they had to say the word and then they could pop the balloon. Once the balloons were popped I called out the next sight word and the game went on. This game helped the girls be able to recognize the sight word simply by me calling out the word.<br />

<br />
My kids had their first day of school this past week. I think it's always fun to have the kids hold up a sign and with all the ideas floating around Pinterest you are bound to find something!<br />
<br />
I decided to use a free printable and frame it. While I was buying school supplies at Staples I came across rulers for .25 cents each. I thought the rulers would look cute around a picture frame, so I purchased 8 of them. Since I would be hot gluing the rulers onto the frame I did not want to spend alot of money on frames. I was going to head to the dollar store until I found 2 matching frames at a yard sale. Both frames cost .50 cents....whoot, whoot! <br />
<br />
It was super easy to make the frame. Just added some hot glue to the back of the rulers and stuck them on! The hardest part was that I had to have my husband cut a few of the rulers to fit along the frame. <br />
<br />
Here's what I started off with:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4d9GgJLiZHMPP20MZd8Iijn87ZkDZKlpjx-XzNG0jwme_il582DWzeSS4aUUSAb_8PPBDiHq21oHyHAGkoKTJFr9AwkxzV0w7rDAE4RYAlAxpFDGbb8WXAcxbgrForS31WMfo3ALQ2Nw/s1600/picture+frames+before+rulers+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4d9GgJLiZHMPP20MZd8Iijn87ZkDZKlpjx-XzNG0jwme_il582DWzeSS4aUUSAb_8PPBDiHq21oHyHAGkoKTJFr9AwkxzV0w7rDAE4RYAlAxpFDGbb8WXAcxbgrForS31WMfo3ALQ2Nw/s640/picture+frames+before+rulers+pm.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's what I ended up with:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
Saying my 6 year old daughter loves unicorns is putting it mildly! From stuffed animals to having dressed up as one last Halloween, she just can't get enough of them!<br />

My daughter simply added yarn for her unicorn's mane and tail along with a heart bead for the eye and finally a purple pipe cleaner for the horn. Their is so much more you could add to this but my daughter wanted to keep her unicorn simple. You could add stickers or even color the unicorn with markers. We plan on punching a hole, adding some string and hanging up in my daughter's room. <br />

<br />
For the past two summers my daughter and I have challenged ourselves to see if together we can read 100 books. My little reader just turned six so this was something we worked on together. I first learned of the <a href="http://teachingmama.org/can-you-read-100-books-summer-reading-challenge/" target="_blank">100 book challenge</a> from Angela at <a href="http://teachingmama.org/" target="_blank">Teaching Mama.</a> She created a fun chart to go along with the challenge and we have really had alot of fun with it!<br />
<br />
This was our second summer seeing if we could get to the goal of reading 100 books and we did! Last year my daughter's prize/reward was going to Chuck E Cheese. This year she asked if she could have a play date with some of her friends. So, we invited a bunch of her friends and spent the afternoon at the park. <br />
<br />
Since this was a celebration I knew we needed something yummy to enjoy. So I decided on cupcakes but wanted to somehow turn a regular cupcake into something book related. After searching the internet I came across this adorable idea from <a href="http://www.aturtleslifeforme.com/2015/03/book-party-cupcake-toppers.html" target="_blank">A Turtle's Life For Me. </a> I knew this would be perfect!<br />
<br />
A Turtle's Life For Me shares a tutorial on how to make these cupcakes, which is very simple. However, I switched it up a bit and didn't use PicMonkey. Instead, I googled my daughter's favorite books, saved the image, copied into a word document and printed. It worked perfectly!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYNtxgGJA_W7rRlR5euHR28rtb3dfre461QiARWd76aWgB_lkPDCcJIEGdWB1PNcc9WyzldqOW_5gBQXzyNOuWmIkzRn93NFin6pC3Ox69L34YIphxrkSMLwca3SHgeB6Tx1Box4FulLY/s1600/book+covers+for+cupcakes+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYNtxgGJA_W7rRlR5euHR28rtb3dfre461QiARWd76aWgB_lkPDCcJIEGdWB1PNcc9WyzldqOW_5gBQXzyNOuWmIkzRn93NFin6pC3Ox69L34YIphxrkSMLwca3SHgeB6Tx1Box4FulLY/s400/book+covers+for+cupcakes+pm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Once I printed the book covers, I cut them out so that they look like a book, rubbed a glue stick on the inside of the 'book', inserted a toothpick, pressed together and voila, book cupcakes!<br />
<br />
These book cupcakes were super easy and it was a fun way to celebrate this special accomplishment for my little aspiring reader!<br />

<br />
<br />
We love, love, love strawberries at our house. With it being summer, strawberries are at their best right now and so I'm taking full advantage of enjoying this delicious fruit.<br />
<br />
A few weeks ago we went strawberry picking with the family. It was a fun experience and we got to enjoy the freshest of the fresh strawberries. You can learn more about some of the other yummy ways we enjoyed our favorite berry in our <a href="http://dabblingmomma.blogspot.com/2016/06/strawberry-fun.html" target="_blank">Strawberry Fun </a>post. <br />
<br />
I have made smoothies many times before but wanted more of a slushy, icy cold drink. So here it is.....simple but really refreshingly delicious, especially on these 90+ degree days we've been having!<br />
<br />
What you'll need:<br />
1 cup of strawberries (I like to add a bit more than a cup)<br />
1/4-1/2 cup of water<br />
1 cup of ice<br />
Honey - to act as a sweetener (optional)<br />
<br />
Blend all of these ingredients together until you get the consistency you like. You might have to do this a few times before getting that perfect consistency but through trial and error you'll quickly figure it out. <br />
<br />
If strawberries aren't your favorite fruit then try watermelon, raspberries or lemon! And if you want to make it a tad more fun for the kids add in a packet of kool-aid!!<br />
<br />
Enjoy!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15535576537202359474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-835250692826743180.post-60237885257458794042016-07-05T05:08:00.000-07:002016-07-05T05:08:49.855-07:00Recycled Crafts<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvX8v6Fg8KKpBFGYVsZVk-SSRtfsRgoksb14JSTudDe5vkDnk49AfqDO3r0wOqHUiTrj0QTtLkUvVrsX6gwQWJQBrgipFv2bbJd17wVH8Td8mtGPgU7h153BVn6Js9Y31Vz6rKZitVAdA/s1600/recycle+crafts+collage+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvX8v6Fg8KKpBFGYVsZVk-SSRtfsRgoksb14JSTudDe5vkDnk49AfqDO3r0wOqHUiTrj0QTtLkUvVrsX6gwQWJQBrgipFv2bbJd17wVH8Td8mtGPgU7h153BVn6Js9Y31Vz6rKZitVAdA/s400/recycle+crafts+collage+pm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
If you're like me you keep containers, toilet paper rolls, boxes, etc for crafts to do with the kids. Here are a few recycled materials that we crafted with. <br />
<br />
Turtle Craft:<br />
We used a plastic container for the turtle's shell. You could also cut off the bottom part of a soda bottle and use that too!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJlPsXkw08Zg0mDWiSycQtMXa5vBrDYwWitxQ6C_gWZuGmP2bsJhPqYSelo98nd8bAgC6Gcs7GDcvUGWhyphenhyphen1_jRUSaMbPY6YCvN9UgReEXC2oNAAwX4cRthdCGT4uNawudponW-uOv6grA/s1600/turtle+craft+complete+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJlPsXkw08Zg0mDWiSycQtMXa5vBrDYwWitxQ6C_gWZuGmP2bsJhPqYSelo98nd8bAgC6Gcs7GDcvUGWhyphenhyphen1_jRUSaMbPY6YCvN9UgReEXC2oNAAwX4cRthdCGT4uNawudponW-uOv6grA/s400/turtle+craft+complete+pm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Fireworks Painting:<br />
Their are so many ways to craft with toilet paper rolls. When I saw this post from<a href="http://www.happinessishomemade.net/2015/07/01/4th-of-july-kids-craft-painting-fireworks/" target="_blank"> Happiness is Homemade</a> I knew we could use a bunch of our toilet paper rolls in one pop. I found the post right in time to do for the 4th of July. I also realized that painting with the rolls not only turn out looking like fireworks but like flowers, too! Just add a stem and maybe a center and voila...a flower!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5dE-YIAZhEUNq4x3E9EiYMqFqBO_KSltB8WAiI4x-8vz7BPQlb6iUN7etF26zrOlXwTHXzp3NEN-Ar3fe0rnRlA6jbkSOXQApMFmlQ7-hXn7HjYb3u5F2G6FRfsPWJu5a9WJOqXruRHk/s1600/toilet+paper+roll+painting+fireworks+or+make+into+flower+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5dE-YIAZhEUNq4x3E9EiYMqFqBO_KSltB8WAiI4x-8vz7BPQlb6iUN7etF26zrOlXwTHXzp3NEN-Ar3fe0rnRlA6jbkSOXQApMFmlQ7-hXn7HjYb3u5F2G6FRfsPWJu5a9WJOqXruRHk/s640/toilet+paper+roll+painting+fireworks+or+make+into+flower+pm.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>pressing lighter with the toilet paper roll gives more of the 'fireworks' look.....</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Nnu0zydXGl2fw9RY8PXdeRzlepFJ7xWq-sIr16PIWzjbWQV0C02qUBSQi6-4ikEj4JRj7vRAfJsUMyvH_djBTqU1jOKxqSF_KX84uXiZfQhRG0RERWUrCwDQrsQ_FOSBTzcwsGnXlGw/s1600/fireworks+painting+on+purple+paper+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Nnu0zydXGl2fw9RY8PXdeRzlepFJ7xWq-sIr16PIWzjbWQV0C02qUBSQi6-4ikEj4JRj7vRAfJsUMyvH_djBTqU1jOKxqSF_KX84uXiZfQhRG0RERWUrCwDQrsQ_FOSBTzcwsGnXlGw/s400/fireworks+painting+on+purple+paper+pm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Patriotic Cup:<br />
This is another craft that was perfect for 4th of July but you could also turn this cup into a snowman or maybe paint it orange and turn it into a pumpkin, depending on what the season is. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMMhg1sEEnVngcN8tzHWLgDFOKaeoRSX4ZYX5nUv3i5MyEvRyyvguTeddWdBfxcuvy3oYN8VcpE-sJa39l_1Y2uWTSK2IHzEj29th2lGisFyO4d-GYT1RYB_U0o-RtLZ_b7DtATqb_OXU/s1600/4th+of+july+craft+cup+man+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMMhg1sEEnVngcN8tzHWLgDFOKaeoRSX4ZYX5nUv3i5MyEvRyyvguTeddWdBfxcuvy3oYN8VcpE-sJa39l_1Y2uWTSK2IHzEj29th2lGisFyO4d-GYT1RYB_U0o-RtLZ_b7DtATqb_OXU/s640/4th+of+july+craft+cup+man+pm.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Paper Plate Frog:<br />
Another favorite of ours is using paper plates to get creative with. After reading some National Geographic kids books on animals we tried making this paper plate frog.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg29GQ_8lz2L9s9Wxx_4Vg49T6pMNvgFpMUiA6lSBa1tllbB2wLdv56LQKw2rfKo53CQUUMXyfnr6PbYpVY2r_FscqJxCXqcdQHyWEMYLli1dUBRY8nLpljW48T26hJs2tdjyn0TMbuAY8/s1600/Tiffany+with+frog+craft+complete+april+2016+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg29GQ_8lz2L9s9Wxx_4Vg49T6pMNvgFpMUiA6lSBa1tllbB2wLdv56LQKw2rfKo53CQUUMXyfnr6PbYpVY2r_FscqJxCXqcdQHyWEMYLli1dUBRY8nLpljW48T26hJs2tdjyn0TMbuAY8/s400/Tiffany+with+frog+craft+complete+april+2016+pm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Shoe Boxes:<br />
Saving the best for last. We LOVE making diorama's. Their is no limit to what you can create when it comes to shoebox diorama's. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And finally, here are a few other ways we've used recycled materials to craft with:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I've been seeing these adorable cupcakes on pinterest which are perfect for summer. They have a beach and pool theme and am so glad we tried making them. These cupcakes are super easy, super fun to make/decorate and of course super delicious to eat!<br />
<br />
Here's what you'll need to make these cupcakes:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Blue icing, the funfetti is what we used which was perfect because it included the fish sprinkles.</li>
<li>Cake mix, any boxed kind will do.</li>
<li>Teddy grahams</li>
<li>Graham crackers</li>
<li>Gummy ring candy</li>
<li>Cocktail umbrellas</li>
</ul>
<div>
Directions:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>bake the cake mix according to box instructions</li>
<li>cool and ice cupcakes</li>
<li>crush a sleeve of graham crackers </li>
</ul>
<div>
The next part is the most fun! Definitely recruit the kids to help decorate these cupcakes! Once the icing is on, you can make some cupcakes a beach theme. Do this by dipping the icing into the crushed graham crackers. Lay your bear down in the sand, add a beach umbrella and voila! A sun bathing teddy graham! Or you can stick to a pool theme and just add a teddy graham to the inside of a gummy candy ring and insert into the icing and you have a bear chillin' in the pool! You could also use gummy life savers to act as the tube for the bears. I've also seen fruit by the foot used as a beach towel! Let your imagination run wild!</div>

<br />
It is FINALLY strawberry season! The one fruit my entire family loves is strawberries. I have been waiting for this delicious berry to finally be at it's peak and the time is here! <br />
<br />
We took the kids strawberry picking recently and it was such a fun experience. We picked just over 4lbs of strawberries and wanted to use these freshly picked strawberries right away. <br />
<br />

Here are a couple of fun ways we used to prepare our batch of strawberries and I wanted to share these ideas with your family........<br />
<br />
When we got home my husband got straight to work making strawberry sauce to put over vanilla ice-cream. My daughter loved just taking scoopfuls of the strawberry sauce and I enjoyed putting it over yogurt! We also used the strawberry sauce for waffles! (sorry no pics of the waffles, we devoured them too fast, ha!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbTYsMh-qRD3QyUZ8PvndPlmoQyFc9JOqbdxtUP7JOKM5miQDrSwQFGD2rlYPuE65xbfQR9Ac3WQvtAdci66RX3Vob-Jm3iJ8rfYwEymvEQbMIYzwuFYo0GtciBizd4P84uy2fPA_E2B8/s1600/yogurt+with+strawberry+sauce.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbTYsMh-qRD3QyUZ8PvndPlmoQyFc9JOqbdxtUP7JOKM5miQDrSwQFGD2rlYPuE65xbfQR9Ac3WQvtAdci66RX3Vob-Jm3iJ8rfYwEymvEQbMIYzwuFYo0GtciBizd4P84uy2fPA_E2B8/s400/yogurt+with+strawberry+sauce.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I knew that I wanted to make something light and cool to fit nicely with summer. I spotted those mini graham cracker crusts at the store and knew that I could use them with the strawberries. I decided on mini no bake cheesecakes that took only minutes to make and no baking which I try and avoid during summer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAbFODm67jeW2fX1Er81PDEXVuTqxzX1k91qb-2g-wx79Hz9OuZyetiOEnTmNXh5Zh1_By9MmrcsdC6xVdhKCEpVE7Az1d3Q6GXur10fSM7GOeiS5UuQcmmlmDpa1I_MDt8JKYe3sWzYQ/s1600/mini+no+bake+cheesecakes.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAbFODm67jeW2fX1Er81PDEXVuTqxzX1k91qb-2g-wx79Hz9OuZyetiOEnTmNXh5Zh1_By9MmrcsdC6xVdhKCEpVE7Az1d3Q6GXur10fSM7GOeiS5UuQcmmlmDpa1I_MDt8JKYe3sWzYQ/s400/mini+no+bake+cheesecakes.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We were able to use up our strawberries between what we made above but if you need to freeze them and want to know the best way, here's a good 'how to' post.....<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/publication/cooking-for-2/freezing-fresh-picked-strawberries" target="_blank">Freezing Fresh Picked Strawberries </a> from Taste of Home.<br />
<br />
Check the local farms in your area to find out where you and your family can experience strawberry picking. If the season has already ended where you live, be sure to check out other 'pick your own' varieties as this is really a fun and inexpensive activity to share with the family!<br />
<br />
Here are some photos from our strawberry picking experience:<br />

<br />
Two summers ago my husband was able to get his hands on a chalk board. I was thrilled because I knew my kids would love using it outdoors! You can check out all the fun my kids have had with our <a href="http://dabblingmomma.blogspot.com/2014/07/outdoor-slate-chalkboard.html" target="_blank">Outdoor Slate Chalkboard</a> post. <br />
<br />
My daughter has been working hard this past school year learning sight words. I thought it would be fun to reinforce what she's learned by writing messages every day on the chalkboard. My messages always include sight words from the list her kindergarten teacher has sent home, in addition to some new ones.<br />
<br />
Here are some of the messages:<br />

I will continue doing this every day throughout the summer. If you don't have something like this to leave messages on, simply writing on a piece of paper and leaving a 'note' for your child will be fun too and a great way to learn sight words!</div>

<br />
My daughter and I really enjoy our library visits and then reading all the books we find. Some are real treasures like this one by Kali Stileman called, Roly-Poly Egg. This is a cute book about a bird named Splotch who lays an egg, an absolutely perfect and beautiful egg of course. But the egg rolls away and begins an adventure rolling, somersaulting and flying all while meeting some new animal friends along the way. <br />
<br />
Besides reading books we also enjoy pairing them with crafts. We both thought it would be fun to paint our very own Splotch and egg. Here's what we used and how it turned out:<br />
<br />
You will need:<br />
Paper<br />
Paint<br />
Paint brushes<br />
Googly eyes<br />
Craft foam<br />
<br />
We happened to have red paint just like the color of Splotch in the book. But, if you do not have red paint, you can make your very own unique Splotch with any colors you have on hand. What's great about this painting is that Splotch is just that a 'splotch' or a 'glob' so really easy for even the littlest of kiddos to paint! <br />
<br />
Start off by painting Splotch<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmvw0QDd1p9wXf32txBM59r-4uoKbQFkq6swDfLaUalSvHLSQZSQgICFRAtdL66jLMk5Yw67fSqQnEwCQCZ5lgqgSg8FIPDV2vvFnv5z2WzcqMh40qg5FuDZWdDgS6-x9uAlcnBHwSkpc/s1600/Tiffany+painting+splotch.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmvw0QDd1p9wXf32txBM59r-4uoKbQFkq6swDfLaUalSvHLSQZSQgICFRAtdL66jLMk5Yw67fSqQnEwCQCZ5lgqgSg8FIPDV2vvFnv5z2WzcqMh40qg5FuDZWdDgS6-x9uAlcnBHwSkpc/s400/Tiffany+painting+splotch.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Add some googly eyes</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOYtuqQ3BGiu707jr-_4hGsWG1RHpiumB-TE3BdBJeMXWJYCNhm8BJQ92DkNgoRYJZPMa6VNiV9SuRN2EF-cNHZviAq6-RLQIiTLk9r9UxJ1-ktYjdJTRUcLZ4jGDL0y5aXUpdX7w_rQ8/s1600/googly+eyes+on+splotch+roly+poly+book+craft+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOYtuqQ3BGiu707jr-_4hGsWG1RHpiumB-TE3BdBJeMXWJYCNhm8BJQ92DkNgoRYJZPMa6VNiV9SuRN2EF-cNHZviAq6-RLQIiTLk9r9UxJ1-ktYjdJTRUcLZ4jGDL0y5aXUpdX7w_rQ8/s400/googly+eyes+on+splotch+roly+poly+book+craft+pm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next add the tree by painting the tree branch and some leaves.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My daughter also wanted to paint Splotch's egg AND the baby bird after it hatched. We kept a page in the book open so that she could have something to work from.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirwOrrR5dN_P5Sz76i1A7KIXEQaUgqYXKXfCAyINcmsToPVPTVqZdAWV4i5OiSUsZOWfZx7fvNtYvKe2sUP7bcSdAFecjA1KeJURJMIauy_myL_QXCuugGwUJOwzrRnYaRYaBqOX6UCZ4/s1600/tiffany+painting+from+roly+poly+book+craft+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirwOrrR5dN_P5Sz76i1A7KIXEQaUgqYXKXfCAyINcmsToPVPTVqZdAWV4i5OiSUsZOWfZx7fvNtYvKe2sUP7bcSdAFecjA1KeJURJMIauy_myL_QXCuugGwUJOwzrRnYaRYaBqOX6UCZ4/s400/tiffany+painting+from+roly+poly+book+craft+pm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The egg was fun to paint, especially sticking on the colored dots. I cut out small circles from craft foam to use as the dots for the egg.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibJNTgs3zmaN0yir41lXJALxAHkeP-nmfrQnYYA9yTgDJ6LmD0-rOIMeb41wgZUfrZlZUvZQIRp4w5Dt9FLcqJ2MCTqsdFdObNVRAIoKba-8rRCO1ZVIZQf1GP8pFz3MpY98TNBDJtyTU/s1600/roly+poly+book+craft+splotch+baby+egg.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibJNTgs3zmaN0yir41lXJALxAHkeP-nmfrQnYYA9yTgDJ6LmD0-rOIMeb41wgZUfrZlZUvZQIRp4w5Dt9FLcqJ2MCTqsdFdObNVRAIoKba-8rRCO1ZVIZQf1GP8pFz3MpY98TNBDJtyTU/s400/roly+poly+book+craft+splotch+baby+egg.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I wanted in on the fun too so I also painted a version of Splotch and his egg.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnzDV8_Efg8wAxYntnJBKXHJ7DVAgVHhoa3xXrM2619dIPs89FNz6nd3gEVc0JLM37zKPkTrRglPCYypS4g5qjPSr6lIpXEJYs5dGdAa0DVL8_vZ-VgwYdmh3_65pNoLnpDMX_RHPOGAg/s1600/teacher+appreication+flower+pot+flowers+full+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnzDV8_Efg8wAxYntnJBKXHJ7DVAgVHhoa3xXrM2619dIPs89FNz6nd3gEVc0JLM37zKPkTrRglPCYypS4g5qjPSr6lIpXEJYs5dGdAa0DVL8_vZ-VgwYdmh3_65pNoLnpDMX_RHPOGAg/s640/teacher+appreication+flower+pot+flowers+full+pm.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My children's school celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week this week. It's a wonderful opportunity to show our great teachers how much we thank them for all they do for our children.<br />
<br />
I purchased this flower pot from Etsy and filled it with gift cards and scratch off lottery tickets. <br />
<br />
Here's what I added and supplies needed:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Floral foam </li>
<li>Skewer sticks</li>
<li>Foam flowers</li>
<li>Hot glue gun</li>
<li>Tape</li>
<li>Artificial grass</li>
</ul>
<div>
I cut the floral foam to size and placed it into the bottom of the pot. Next, I cut out some flowers from craft foam and hot glued them to the skewer sticks. I then stuck the skewer sticks into the foam and added the gift cards to the fronts of the flowers. Finally, I topped it off by adding some artificial grass.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My hope was to give my child's teacher a gift that she would be able to enjoy now; the gift cards and then the flower pot, hopefully something she'll be able to use for years to come. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Know though that showing your child's teacher appreciation doesn't have to cost alot or anything at all. In addition to the flower pot I helped the children learn a quick and easy song to sing to their teacher. I think the song was the real winner!! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Lets remember our teachers!!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>

A National Geographic Kids Book Activity<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnzPwT2Ntny0twXhzbS6lnWLirowJjoxxo8raWOdSRrOCW9gY0lZmU572jAmI12LmCrBok2Ftnej4OfXcQf7Pz2ldmSBP2O4N5r8NOIkg9xfo4LqnEbmqjKP9ocscpyGmisurLLfk8YqI/s1600/who+am+i+national+geographic+activity+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnzPwT2Ntny0twXhzbS6lnWLirowJjoxxo8raWOdSRrOCW9gY0lZmU572jAmI12LmCrBok2Ftnej4OfXcQf7Pz2ldmSBP2O4N5r8NOIkg9xfo4LqnEbmqjKP9ocscpyGmisurLLfk8YqI/s400/who+am+i+national+geographic+activity+pm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Each month my daughter brings home the Scholastic book order forms. I love how she sits down and circles the books that she wants. One of the books she circles every time are these National Geographic Kids books. My daughter is in kindergarten and the books are perfect because they are in line for pre-readers. This series of books are great for kids as they explore a child's interest and motivate their minds to want to read. National Geographic for Kids is considered informational reading, which is critical to success as the child progresses through school. This series of informational books also helps a child learn about the world, while helping them with reading comprehension. There was also another book I included <i>not</i> in the National Geographic Kids series, which goes to show that you can do this activity with any of your childs favorite book(s)<br />
<br />
This Who Am I activity was an extension to these books to help with comprehension skills. <br />
<br />
I simply copied the covers of each of the books we ordered, laminated them, cut out and attached popsicle sticks to them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUA1oKV3Yu6eV8UxuDdef0bt7P24p9UnyeY7WaY-GcNxlUX8v1YHeKXKSHb2MNr4X0D_hT3pPTdib_5dxhOF8jyq-QKEwdFXxzowoeNdmf6ESr972nsv8s3NkCcL7dk4vx1cI3FB4WBXk/s1600/animal+questions+national+geographic.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUA1oKV3Yu6eV8UxuDdef0bt7P24p9UnyeY7WaY-GcNxlUX8v1YHeKXKSHb2MNr4X0D_hT3pPTdib_5dxhOF8jyq-QKEwdFXxzowoeNdmf6ESr972nsv8s3NkCcL7dk4vx1cI3FB4WBXk/s640/animal+questions+national+geographic.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-EkS5wK4zcHHeotAD5UnQeGs5BJKDkPg7KBGhrE3aAjFRg2BaZDnTBVWaS04AREgN53m5v6dIo3_eGtbYW92CBAIk4ObwnxrHzCoYm7GWHYmKf3QcflVDuJ5jZUdo6E0vHee7RWcnd3g/s1600/national+geographic+books+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-EkS5wK4zcHHeotAD5UnQeGs5BJKDkPg7KBGhrE3aAjFRg2BaZDnTBVWaS04AREgN53m5v6dIo3_eGtbYW92CBAIk4ObwnxrHzCoYm7GWHYmKf3QcflVDuJ5jZUdo6E0vHee7RWcnd3g/s400/national+geographic+books+pm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">Next, I made up a list of questions. Things like: "which animal hibernates in the winter." OR "which animal is an amphibian." I made sure to ask questions about each of the animals in the series we have.</span></div>
<br />
It really made my daughter think about the animals we read in each book, working on her comprehension skills.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivn7cqqnLdsn9TFi7A_bpGcixhnPUtr8Q38-N1LSs98UsKJjS5gLww9AI_MZ4nWtShCshGVXCcgKc4Hpx6bIS6BQqxT-ezxDJW0mu5w-HDDNNMLR6L9L-NGu3egtg1p6Q3-wME9FWSq7c/s1600/Tiffany+April+2016+holding+up+bunny+national+geographic.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivn7cqqnLdsn9TFi7A_bpGcixhnPUtr8Q38-N1LSs98UsKJjS5gLww9AI_MZ4nWtShCshGVXCcgKc4Hpx6bIS6BQqxT-ezxDJW0mu5w-HDDNNMLR6L9L-NGu3egtg1p6Q3-wME9FWSq7c/s400/Tiffany+April+2016+holding+up+bunny+national+geographic.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
We also tied a craft into this activity by using the frog book and made our very own frog craft.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What you'll need to make this paper plate frog:</div>

Start off by painting your plate green.<br />
While your paper plate is drying help your child trace their hands. Once the plate is completely dry, use some tape and attach your child's cut out hands to the bottom of the plate. This will be the frog's feet.<br />
Next, cut out 2 circles from the white construction paper to serve as the frog's eyes and draw black dots in the center of each circle. Attach to the top of the paper plate.<br />
Take your black marker or black crayon and draw a smiley face.<br />
Finally, take your yarn, attach to the back of the paper plate and hang up.<br />

<br />
My daughters kindergarten class is in full blown sight word learning mode! Each week the students learn a new sight word and my daughter comes home with worksheets that I keep so that we can practice at home. I decided to use these words and make up a game to make learning/memorizing these new words more fun.<br />
<br />
Before Easter I picked up these paper Easter eggs from the dollar section at Target. I then wrote the sight words on a piece of paper, laminated them and cut them out. I also added a GO card and a STOP card just to make the game a bit more interesting. <i>The laminating part is optional. </i><br />
<br />
The rules of the game are simple. All the sight words are put into a pile and each player draws one of the cards. If the player can read the sight word they take an egg. If a STOP card gets drawn, the player loses a turn and can't go again until they draw a GO card. If the GO card is drawn first, the player holds onto the card and can use it if they draw a STOP card. The player with the most eggs at the end of the game, wins. <br />
<br />
I used the eggs because it was around the Easter season but anything can be used. Other ideas could be matchbox cars, pom-pom's, candies, anything that will catch the attention of your child. <br />

<br />
I love to read books with my 5 year old. We visit the library about once every 2-3 weeks and usually borrow about 25 books at a time. We've been doing this for about 2 years and over the course of this time I've seen how my daughter has evolved from the board book section to the non board book section. She's learning to look at her book choices in a different way and it's really fun to watch how she decides on whether a book is to her liking or not.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We've read many books, some that bring smiles, laughter, tears and sleepy eyes. For bedtime reading I try and choose books that have a more calming tone to them. Here are a list of our <a href="http://dabblingmomma.blogspot.com/2015/03/calming-bedtime-books.html" target="_blank">favorite bedtime stories.</a><br />
<br />
I love watching my daughter as I read to her and her reaction to the story. I especially love the stories that make her giggle or out right laugh. Here is a list of books that we have read that might make your little ones giggle too!<br />
<br />
Bark, George<br />

<br />
These are just a few of our favorite 'giggle' books. Mo Willems especially has a line of not just funny but hilarious books guaranteed to make your little ones laugh. <br />
<br />
I hope you enjoy our favorites as much as we do! Happy reading!</div>

<br />
This is such a wonderful time of the year. As the long cold days of winter begin to end we start to get outside more, enjoying warmer weather and witnessing the first signs of spring.<br />
<br />
We live in the Northeast and this time of year is very welcome! We take advantage of this weather by heading outdoors and searching for the first signs of spring. This is such a fun activity to do with your child. This activity requires no set up and teaches a child so much. <br />
<br />
Your child will use their sensory skills as they smell fresh flowers and the fresh spring air. They will use their hearing and sight as they watch and listen to the birds. <br />
<br />
Lots of talking goes on with this activity which is great for your child's vocabulary.<br />
<br />
Lately when we head outside my daughter loves it even more because she feels like she is going on a hunt, searching for new signs of spring. <br />
<br />
Here are some of the signs we have found:<br />

<br />
Sequencing is important as it helps a child comprehend what is read and identify with the beginning, middle and end of what they are reading. <br />
<br />
We have done sequencing with storybooks and with nursery rhymes. Nursery rhymes are most familiar to children and are a go to for parents, caregivers and teachers so they are a good place to start with a sequence activity. A child's favorite story would also be good to use since the child will be familiar with the story line.<br />
<br />
I used a piece of cardboard to make a book board which works very nicely for this kind of activity. However, using a book board is absolutely not necessary and simply laying out the cards on a table or floor will work just as well!<br />
<br />
Materials we used:<br />
<br />
Cardboard<br />
Velcro<br />
Printed photos of nursery rhymes<br />
Laminator (optional)<br />
<br />
<i>Remember if you are not using a book board simply print some photos or cut from magazines and/or newspapers. Laminating is also not necessary it just preserves the photos. </i><br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/" target="_blank">Teachers Pay Teachers</a> is a great site and is where I found these nursery rhyme printables. Once the nursery rhyme photos are printed:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Laminate them</li>
<li>Cut them out</li>
<li>Put some velcro on the cardboard and on the back of the printables</li>
<li> <i> Keep in mind if not using a book board just skip this part.</i></li>
</ul>
<br />

<br /></div>
Sequencing does not need to be done only by using nursery rhymes or books. If you don't have a printer to print off pictures, try cutting pictures from the newspaper or magazines and do a picture sequence.<br />
<br />
You could sequence things like the life cycle of a caterpillar or bedtime routine. Be sure to use words like, "first", "next" and "last". <br />
<br />
Sequencing might seem simple to teach but keep in mind it is a skill that is carried over to other areas so take the time necessary to ensure your child fully understands. <br />

<br />
With some creativity learning how to read can be fun! My daughter had a blast learning CVC words with this balloon game. She also loves a good hunt so this game was a winner all the way around!<br />
<br />
Use whatever balloons you might have lying around, we had some of those long skinny balloons so I used those.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Found one of the balloons and sounding out the word</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzb4kC3hJvm2oULWApyUxlrEyg6k4o4In2EgUWq9rX3f_sLy1Bk1Dqhh9sPS0JI7TRYt0gjFb1LWT5s1NUavyIXk5YBmGfiPmBNmuOPsAVlmZ7638hbG_h-Gkff8TvcamZCVqoIUIlvk8/s1600/T+reading+a+cvc+word+balloon+feb+2015+pm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzb4kC3hJvm2oULWApyUxlrEyg6k4o4In2EgUWq9rX3f_sLy1Bk1Dqhh9sPS0JI7TRYt0gjFb1LWT5s1NUavyIXk5YBmGfiPmBNmuOPsAVlmZ7638hbG_h-Gkff8TvcamZCVqoIUIlvk8/s1600/T+reading+a+cvc+word+balloon+feb+2015+pm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
After my daughter found a balloon she would sound out the word and then run over to these bins where I attached different CVC words with the same vowel sound. She matched up the word on the balloon that had the same vowel sound/rhyming word as the word taped to the bins.<br />

<br />
I am very excited to be working with a little boy in my daughter's kindergarten class who needs some extra attention. The teacher told me that he has had some trouble recognizing his name so she asked me to work on that with him. I've come up with some ideas that would be fun all while learning. Last week I used cars to help learn his name with our<a href="http://dabblingmomma.blogspot.com/2016/01/car-name-game-name-identification.html" target="_blank"> Car Name Game</a>. This week I'm sharing a new fun way to learn/recognize a child's name.<br />
<br />
I had a black bean bin already set up that I had used with my daughter with different projects and thought I could use this for some name recognition fun. I added some bright colored balloon stickers with letters on them that looked great against the black beans. I put all the letters of the boys name along with some other letters not in his name and also some blank ones. <br />
<br />
I was thrilled to see him dig right in and really enjoy the sensory part of this activity. I asked him to find the balloon stickers and to put all the letters of his name in a pile separate from the letters not in his name. As for the blank balloon stickers he put those in another pile.<br />
<br />
We use a laminated sheet with his name on it when we do our name activities so that he has that as a reference when learning to recognize his name.<br />
<br />
Once all the stickers were sorted I asked him to stick the stickers on a piece of paper spelling out his name, he did great! I then asked him to write the letters of his name on the blank balloon stickers and stick those onto paper too.<br />
<br />
He was so proud of himself as was I! The black beans and bright colored balloon stickers was a real hit in helping this little boy learn the letters in his name!<br />
<br />
More to come on name activities....stay tuned!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15535576537202359474noreply@blogger.com11
